Tara bolted straight up in bed and whipped around to see whom she had slept with. No one was there, nor any telltale dents in the pillow or bed sheets. She flopped back into the bed and flung her arm across her face.

“Ow!”

Then she remembered her bruised eye. And then Jeffrey. Glancing out the window, she hoped to get her bearings, but all she saw was a wall of white crystals, clinging half way up the glass pane. Now she recalled the snowstorm, and that she left the police station with Jeffrey. She’d decided to stay.

“This must be his house.”

The buzzing of an alarm clock echoed into the hallway.

Where is that coming from?

She untangled herself from the bed sheets and tiptoed into the hall, following the buzzing sound straight to his partially open bedroom door. She tilted her head and craned her neck. Her heart fluttered guiltily, but she had to peek inside his room.

Jeffrey rolled to his side and silenced the alarm clock. He flipped off the covers and rocked out of bed. Clasping his arms above his head, he maneuvered them back between his shoulder blades, twisted at the waist, and yawned.

The wooden floor creaked as Tara backed away. His head jerked toward the door, his eyes gone wide. They stared at each other. Heat rose to her face. Jeffrey’s ears turned crimson too. She had caught him in his underwear, and now she was staring at his junk, his boxers tenting his morning erection.
