HENRIETTA
By Shirley Kelly
(work in progress)

SUMMARY:   Henrietta dreams of marrying her childhood friend despite her parent’s objections. The Duke and Duchess of Branford don’t consider a penniless man with no title a suitable match for their eldest daughter. Henrietta’s dreams are crushed when her friend comes home with a wife. Heartbroken, she vows she’ll never love again. She hardens her heart and swears to marry solely for position and wealth. She’s ready to accept the proposal of a man she doesn’t love when she realizes she’s already met the man of her dreams.

Autumn, 1811
Devon, England

Henrietta smiled with pride as she untied her apron and looked around the tiny kitchen. The sun sparkled through the clean windowpanes. Not one spot of dust dared to mar the worn, but cherished furniture. The delicious smell of chicken and fresh herbs came from the pot bubbling on the stove.

She couldn’t wait until her dearest friend Peter Wickett came home. She knew he’d be so delighted by her efforts, he’d get down on bended knee. However, she knew her parents would not approve. After all, she was Lady Henrietta Ashford, the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Branford, and they expected her to make a spectacular match. She doubted they would consider marriage to her childhood friend a spectacular match, or for that matter, even a suitable one.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Shirley Kelly has always been a voracious reader. Growing up, her favorite genres were mysteries and romances. Her favorite romances were set in the Regency era. Shirley always knew she’d be a writer, but it wasn’t until she joined the RWA that she got serious about her craft. Shirley currently lives on the UWS of Manhattan. She loves cats, enjoys traveling, watches a lot of TV, and is interested in history and politics. She follows tennis and figure skating, and is a life-long Yankee fan. KNIGHT OF RAPTURE
by Ruth A. Casie
Carina Press

SUMMARY:  He crossed the centuries to find her…For months Lord Arik has been trying to find the right combination of runes to create the precise spell to rescue his wife, Rebeka, but the druid knight will soon discover that reaching her four hundred years in the future is only the beginning of his quest. He arrives in the 21st century to find her memory of him erased, his legacy on the brink of destruction, and traces of dark magick at every turn.

A threat has followed…Bran, the dark druid, is more determined than ever to get his revenge. His evil has spread across the centuries. Arik will lose all. Time is his weapon, and he’s made sure his plan leaves no one dear to Arik, in past or present, safe from the destruction.  But their enemy has overlooked the strongest magick of all…

Professor Rebeka Tyler is dealing with more than just a faulty memory. Ownership of Fayne Manor, her home, has been called into question. Convenient accidents begin happening putting those she cares for in the line of fire. And then there’s the unexpected arrival of a strange man dressed like he belonged in a medieval fair—a man who somehow is always around when needed, and always on her mind. She doesn’t know who to trust. But one thing is certain. Her family line and manor have survived for over eleven centuries. She won’t let them fall, not on her watch… in any century.

Visions of his warm bed and even warmer wife lit Lord Arik’s face. A deep rich chuckle rumbled in his chest at the vivid images of how he’d wake Rebeka. Who would have thought the great druid Grand Master was a besotted bridegroom? The summer had been warm and all the sweeter with Rebeka by his side. He stood on the open terrace at the back of the manor, surveyed his domain and swelled with pride. Fayne Manor was a thriving estate that had been the family home for eleven centuries and it would stand for eleven more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Ruth A. Casie is happiest when telling stories either chatting in a group or writing them down.  Here’s what she had to say: “I love to put my hero and heroine in tough situations and dare them to work it out—together, always together. They haven’t disappointed me.  Oh, they complain but in the end their love and relationships are stronger than ever.  While I keep tormenting my druid knight, I’m outlining a new series. The working title is the River of Time. It’s about an elite technology security officer, whose job is to eliminate time travelers, but falls in love with a time traveling art appraiser and has to choose between his duty and his one chance for a timeless love. I love this story line because it lets me stretch my contemporary voice while working in historic time periods. I think this is the best of both worlds. For most of you, my contemporary side will be a surprise.”   Visit Ruth at www.RuthACasie.com and www.RuthACasie.blogspot.com.

SUCH A DANCE
By Kate McMurray
Kensington Books

NOTE:  This book will be published in October 2015.  Here’s a sneak peek!

SUMMARY:  When a vaudeville dancer meets a sexy mobster in a speakeasy for men, the sparks fly, the gin flows, the jazz sizzles—and the heat is on…

Eddie Cotton is a talented song-and-dance man with a sassy sidekick, a crowd-pleasing act, and a promising future on Broadway. What he doesn’t have is someone to love. Being gay in an era of prohibition and police raids, Eddie doesn’t have many opportunities to meet men like himself—until he discovers a hot new jazz club for gentlemen of a certain bent…and sets eyes on the most seductive, and dangerous, man he’s ever seen.

Lane Carillo is a handsome young Sicilian who looks like Valentino—and works for the Mob. He’s never hidden his sexuality from his boss, which is why he was chosen to run a private night club for men. When Lane spots Eddie at the bar, it’s lust at first sight. Soon, the unlikely pair are falling hard and fast—in love. But when their whirlwind romance starts raising eyebrows all across town, Lane and Eddie have to decide if their relationship is doomed…or something special worth fighting for.

Left, right, left. Left, left, right, right, hop. Step forward, step back, hop, tip hat, blow the lady a kiss.

The steps were easy enough, the routine so committed to memory that Eddie could let a dozen other things swim through his mind without missing a beat.

He tossed his cane in the air and let it twirl. Light bounced off the polished silver shaft of it as the audience murmured appreciatively. Eddie caught it deftly, bowed a little, and moved his feet to the left, right, right, left, left, hop. He grinned at Marian, who stretched her arms above her head with grace, betraying her ballet training. Then she shuffled over to him, evidence of her years spent on the vaudeville circuit. She sang her lines in her trademark style, which sounded a bit like a goose honking, and the audience roared with laughter. She smiled and winked at him, and he grinned back and sang the end of the song. Left, right, forward, together, a flourish from the horn section of the orchestra. Then there were deep bows before the curtain fell. Applause erupted throughout the James Theater. Eddie and Marian did their goofy curtain call before retreating backstage.

Thus ended Eddie Cotton and Marian France’s act in  Le Tumulte de Broadway, more informally Jimmy Blanchard’s Doozies of 1927, the variety act that was competing with George White and Flo Ziegfeld for ticket dollars and popularity. The song-and-dance team of Cotton and France was among the more popular acts. They were a comedy duo who told jokes, danced their way through physical comedy, and sang funny songs in funny voices. That year, they preceded the Doozy Dolls, fourteen barely-dressed chorines hired more for their looks than their dancing or singing skills.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  RWA/NYC Vice President Kate McMurray is an award-winning romance author and an unabashed romance fan. When she’s not writing, she works as a nonfiction editor, dabbles in various crafts, and is maybe a tiny bit obsessed with baseball. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.  For more information on the book visit:  http://www.katemcmurray.com/books/such-a-dance/

A SWEET SURRENDER
By Lena Hart

SUMMARY:   Siaragowaeh of the Onyota’aka tribe has a love for all things living and when a fallen British soldier becomes severely wounded, Siara secretly nurtures the officer back to health, putting her own position in her tribe at risk.

Sergeant James Blake of His Majesty’s elite assault troops vaguely remembers the ambush that left him at the mercy of a beautiful native woman…a woman he isn’t yet certain he can trust. When a narrow escape from Siara’s village forces them on the trail together, desire soon flares even brighter between them.  Yet in a journey driven by duty and complicated by loyalty, Siara and James must determine if they will follow their predestined paths or surrender to their hearts and chart anew…

**NOTE: this historical romance novelette is featured in the American Revolutionary anthology, FOR LOVE & LIBERTY. Includes a never before published prologue.

Early October, 1777
Upstate New York

“Siara, don’t get too close.”

Siaragowaeh ignored the old healer’s sharp words and knelt beside the sleeping man. She gently placed her hand over his brow. He was now cool to the touch. She fell back on her haunches in relief. The fever was finally leaving his large body.

“Siara!”

“Don’t worry, Etu,” she said in their native tongue, preferring their language to that of the English. Though she needed the practice, Etu barely spoke the foreign language and despite the sachem’s encouragement to adopt the English tongue in their everyday speech, few of those in their clan—the Bear clan—did. She turned to the older woman and offered her a reassuring smile. “See, he’s still asleep.”

“Not for long,” Etu grumbled, her thin lips narrowing further. “My night visions are never wrong. He will rise soon and I see nothing but trouble coming.”

SWEET JAZZ
by Ursula Renée
The Wild Rose Press

SUMMARY:  The Big House's “Coloreds Only” policy makes the club popular with Harlem residents. The same policy makes it harder for the owners to find and retain musicians. After four weeks of listening to saxophonists with bigger dreams than talent, the owners are ready to hire the first person who walks in and plays “one good note.” Their words come back to haunt them when Randy Jones auditions.  Many of the employees are not thrilled when Randy breaks the color barrier. He does find an ally in Cass, the club's sassy singer, who goes out of her way to welcome him. Offstage, Cass Porter looks like a teenager, but when she sings she’s all woman. Inside, she’s been hurt badly and has determined never to love again.  As their relationship develops, life at the club for Randy becomes complicated when he has to fight both Cass’s fear of opening her heart and those who want to keep them apart.

He reminded her of a banana. A long, fat, overripe banana.

Cass tightened her stomach muscles to quiet a growl. She would have found the comparison amusing if she had not forgotten to pack a lunch on the same day she skipped breakfast. Back -to-back auditions had prevented her from grabbing a bite from the corner diner. With no hope of satisfying her hunger anytime soon, all she could do was dream of food as she watched him swagger onto the stage dressed in yellow wide-legged pants, matching broad-shouldered long coat, and a black shirt.

SING ME HOME
By Lisa Ann Verge

SUMMARY:  Blessed with an angel’s voice, Maura of Killeigh escapes from a convent determined to join a band of traveling players.  They’ll be her protection on the roads while she searches for the parents who abandoned her at birth.  But once face-to-face with the seductive, sinfully handsome vagabond who rules the troupe, Maura wonders if she wouldn’t be safer traveling alone.

Killeigh, Ireland
The Year of Our Lord 1307

When Maura finally found the man she was looking for, he was stretched across a woman’s lap, his fingers lost in her cleavage.

She stumbled to a full stop outside the campsite, still hidden in the trees, and tightened her grip on the basket slung across her shoulder. She felt as if she’d just come upon the sort of scene painted in the pages of the Abbess’s Bible, full of wild-eyed demons and half-dressed women and long-tongued satyrs dancing around a woodland fire.

Stop.

She took a breath so deep that her surcoat tightened across her breasts. Certainly the great wide world and all the people in it couldn’t be as dangerous or wicked as the Abbess always insisted.  In any case, it was too late to turn back.  She hadn’t escaped the convent only to lose courage now....

IN THE ARMS OF
THE ENEMY
By Lisbeth Eng
The Wild Rose Press

SUMMARY:  Isabella Ricci has pledged her life for the cause - to free Italy from Nazi oppression. Her mission for the Resistance, to seduce a German officer into revealing military secrets, could be deadly. Can she complete her assignment before losing her heart...or her life?

Isabella wasn’t used to such elegant surroundings and took care not to slip on the polished marble floor in her borrowed shoes. If I fall I’ll never pull this off, and I’d probably rip Silvia’s dress in the process. She almost laughed at the thought, but it was apprehension, not amusement, she felt.

On the stone terrace, she leaned against the outer wall and drew a long breath. The view of the exquisite gardens below did nothing to ease her tension. Perhaps a little food would help. As she turned and looked up, hoping to spot a nearby waiter, she realized she was being observed. He was an officer, tall and dark-haired, probably in his late twenties. She noted from the insignia on his tunic that he was a captain in the German Army.

“Buona sera, signorina,” he said with a courteous smile, and tipped his glass in her direction.

To Isabella, the soft tone of his German-accented Italian seemed at odds with the severity of his Wehrmacht uniform. “Buona sera,” she responded, then quickly turned away. Was it revulsion for the enemy or simply shyness that induced her retreat to the salon? I’ll need to overcome both if I’m to succeed tonight.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Lisbeth Eng is a native New Yorker whose love of literature, history and romance led her on the rewarding path to romance writing. An English major in college, Lisbeth has also studied Italian, German and French. Besides writing, world travel is her passion, and trips to Italy and Germany have lent authenticity to her European-set World War II romance novel. Lisbeth currently lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a stone’s throw from Central Park and Lincoln Center, and loves the fascinating pace of life in the Big Apple.  Visit her at www.lisbetheng.com.

MY LADY GLORIANA
By Sylvia Halliday
Diversion Books

SUMMARY:  The year is 1725. Lady Gloriana Baniard is a beautiful fish out of water. Brought up on the mean streets of London, she is barely literate, coarse, unschooled. But thanks to a brief marriage to an aristocrat, she is forced to live with his noble family and endure the humiliating process of learning to be a lady. Rebelling, she runs away to Yorkshire, where she intends to be a blacksmith, a skill at which she excels. She knows she’ll need a manservant to front for her. When John Thorne appears, she hires him, stirred as much by his irresistible attraction as by his strength.
John Haviland, Duke of Thorneleigh, is an arrogant, indolent gambler and womanizer. Having seen Gloriana just once, he yearns to make her his own. When he learns she has run away from her family, he makes a wild bet with his wastrel companions---he will find the lady and bed her. Disguised as a humble servant, he becomes her assistant, learning the blacksmith trade. The clash of wills between these two proud people creates more sparks than a blacksmith’s anvil, as Gloriana learns to be a lady, Thorne learns humility---and desire deepens to love.  But what will happen to their growing passion if Gloriana learns of Thorne’s thoughtless wager?

London—1725

“Gads! This pantomime is tedious. And it’s stifling in here.”

John Havilland, Duke of Thorneleigh, scowled at the players on the stage. He brushed impatiently at the sleeve of his brocaded coat and turned to his companion. “Let’s go get a drink, Felix. Someplace common and vulgar, so I can take off this damn periwig.”

Lord Felix DeWitt inhaled a pinch of snuff, sneezed delicately and shook his head. “There’s no pleasing you these days, friend Thorne. What’s happened to you?”
Thorne shrugged, unwilling to probe the festering sore inside of him that was growing more difficult to ignore. “God knows. I find life boring, that’s all. The same old pleasures, the artificial women, the carousing that produces nothing but a headache the next morning. Even my gambling gives me no joy. I always win.”

DeWitt’s laughter held the edge of envy. “Yes, damn you. You’ve got a bloody fortune, even without your winnings, while I just scrape by.”

“Faugh! You’re comfortably fixed. You’re just tightfisted. I pity the woman who marries you, forced to come begging for every petticoat and ribbon.”

Just then, the actor on the stage turned his back, bent over, lifted the skirts of his coat and pretended to pass wind. The audience roared.

Thorne felt his stomach lurch with disgust. How had he come to this—a rakehell existence, a life without meaning or direction? Shallow friends, empty days and nights, a mad pursuit of pleasure that left him increasingly dissatisfied. But what else was there for a man of his station and social class? He couldn’t very well disgrace the family honor by going off to be a ditch-digger! Besides, he’d never worked a day in his privileged life; he wouldn’t even know how to begin.

“Damn it, let’s go,” he muttered.

Their connection is what kept his soul intact, what kept him sane enough to deal with the rest of his life when dealing with the craziness that wealth brought.

“We have a lot to discuss, Heart.”

“Kenneth I—”

He leaned down and pressed a hard kiss to stop whatever it was she was about to say. Words weren’t what they needed now. He giggled to himself. If their shrink could hear his thoughts she’d be jumping up and down screaming her opposition to his line of thinking.

Kenneth wasn’t against therapy. It had definitely worked to get the two of them back on track, and he definitely wanted them to sign up for a session or two after this latest fiasco, but this wasn’t something that needed fixing. This was the one way that their communication was perfect and they were absolutely in sync.

He plunged his tongue inside the warmth of her mouth and savored the sweet hint of apple juice that danced on his taste buds.

He pulled back just a moment to give them each a chance to breathe.

“I’m not avoiding the conversation we need to have, and as soon as we’re finished in here we’re going to throw on some clothes and go downstairs in the kitchen and hash this shit out over a cup of coffee. But right now, I just need to feel my wife.”♥

WHEN SPARKS FLY: WICKED LUSTFUL TALES BY MARIA COX

In celebration of the launch of our "When Sparks Fly" Contest,
we have invited some of our members to share with us excerpts or articles about making those Sparks Fly.  Happy Reading.♥

When two people share a strong physical attraction, we call this chemistry.

Chemistry cannot be fabricated, it’s either there or it isn’t. Chemistry is like a magnetic pull that draws you closer and closer to the object of your affection. And, when you feel your lover’s sexual energy matching yours the experience can be intoxicating, nothing is as powerful.

In my short story, STRANDED, Nick and Shana are rekindling a former relationship. When memories of their torrid past emerge they both struggle with conflicting emotions.

His thumb skimmed over her cheek and for a moment, Shana stopped breathing. Nick’s fingers dropped to the hollow of her throat. “Your pulse,” he said sensing her skin with delicate strokes, “Is beating, hard.”
His eyes searched her features for a few seconds before returning to her eyes. Their eyes locked in a staring battle and Shana was reminded at that moment of Nick’s intensity, of his raw sexuality. Yes, he was addictive, enslaving even. How many a night had she spent in his lair wanting nothing more than to be confined to his bed and be taken again, and again?
“I’ve missed touching you.”
Dear God, she missed him touching her too!
Nick’s lush lips angled toward her. A kiss was eminent, yet she stalled. “Wh-at, what are you trying do?”
Nick’s head lowered. “Not sure,” he whispered, “Seduce you, maybe.” His lips brushed hers.
Shana dodged his gesture. “Nick, no…” Her protest was feeble.
“You want this,” he said as his lips flitted down her chin, her jaw to the neck.
A sigh escaped her lips.
“You’re trembling,” Nick murmured as his lips plunged further down her nape, his teeth grazing her earlobe.
Shana’s body did tremble; it quivered with wanton anticipation.
“Shana, I’ll make it good for you,” he purred, his words reverberating in her ear. “You know I can.”

WICKED LUSTFUL TALES (WLT), Vol. 1 is a compilation of three short, spicy stories; the above is an excerpt of one of these three short stories. WLT is published through Melange Books.♥
