It's older than Barbie. And, thank goodness, for it, for its versatility. You can dress it up, dress it down. It's wonderful. Which reminds me, I need a new one. ---MariaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4498845843905507548.post-88883749393779573332009-11-09T13:42:17.783-05:002009-11-09T13:42:17.783-05:00A wonderfully informative post, Polly. I am no follower of fashion (my usual attire outside of work is jeans and sneakers) but I do own 2 of these "little back numbers". I recently has 2 "dress-up" occasions to wear one. With makeup, heels and glittery jewelry, I did feel quite a bit sexier than usual. :) I'll have to dig them out of the back of the closet more frequently!
LisLisbeth Enghttp://www.lisbetheng.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4498845843905507548.post-26580459590048362152009-11-06T22:56:41.428-05:002009-11-06T22:56:41.428-05:00Polly, thank you for your post. I wondered, looking online at Sargent's painting of Madame Gautreau, if Coco Chanel might have been inspired by it. I think the unfinished portrait of Madame Gautreau in the Tate Gallery is even more evocative of the Little Black Dress. The shoulder straps are not fully painted in, so the dress almost looks strapless, and the full-length of the skirt is not completed, making it look like a modern-day, short dress.
What beautiful paintings. I really appreciate being made aware of them through your post. Elizabeth PalladinoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
