FEWER VS LESS

I have been gnashing my teeth for days over TV commentators, none of whom seem to know the word "fewer" anymore. They use "less" constantly, as though they've never heard the word "fewer".

Here's the basic idea: When dealing with the concept of quantities, "less" refers to an indefinite item that can't be counted---Less rain, Less money, eg.

When dealing with specifics, use "fewer"---Fewer raindrops, Fewer dollars.

But now all we hear is---Less beds in hospitals, Less people on the street, Less open stores, etc.

I cringe every time!
