MY HERO DRAKE DENTE

By Karen Cino

When I read romance novels, I’m reading about the perfect hero, tall, athletic and sexy. The type of man you would see in GQ magazine or on the big screen. These are men we love to look at and swoon over. That’s why I wanted to create a character that would look like your next door neighbor.

Hence, Drake Dente was created. Sexy, in the eyes of the heroine, with a splash of emotions, for an Englishman. His brown wavy hair, barely past the nape of his neck, didn’t show a single strand of gray. When he wears jeans, they hug him in all the right places. The only difference between Drake and your neighbor -- Drake is a Rock Star. But, he wasn’t always.

Living across the street from Central Park had always been one of his dreams since he was a young lad growing up in Liverpool, London. Those were the days when his family lived in a one bedroom flat, stone broke, sharing a hamburger and a dream.

In the beginning he was reluctant to leave. Just the thought of leaving his lads behind and going to a new country where he would stand out in the crowd with his heavy British accent scared him half to death.  He did stand out in the crowd, and wasn’t included much in any of the activities his classmates were involved with. But getting stuck in a boring music class got him thinking. That night, he went home and wrote some random words, then began tapping his pencil against the kitchen table.

The next day, when he went back to school, he picked up an acrostic guitar and started singing. While sitting under a tree playing, a lad asked him if he’d like to join their band. They had a drummer and a bass player. He accepted and while playing in a dirty, dingy club, the band was approached by a major record label. Within a few days, they were signed and shot straight to the top, taking their first single to number 1 on the Billboard Chart. After releasing ten albums with twenty number one hits, he slipped out of the limelight. After going through a tough divorce, Drake loses him muse. That’s when he flies down to Acapulco, Mexico, hoping to revive his music career.  Enter a new muse, Nikki Petrino. It’s love at first sight. Oh yeah, Nikki falls head over heels over him.

  1. Sounds like Lennon & McCartney were your muses for Roses. Sounds like a great story Karen.
